Offered for sale is an exceptionally rare and refined Charles Lancaster single shot sidelock shotgun, chambered in 20 gauge and originally manufactured in 1890. This elegant English sporting arm is further distinguished by its direct provenance, having been owned by the late Cyril Adams.
Charles Lancaster is one of the most respected names in British gunmaking history, known for innovation, craftsmanship, and refined sporting arms. Single shot sidelock guns from Lancaster are seldom encountered, particularly in 20 gauge and in such well balanced and usable configuration.
This example features a 30” barrel with a fixed full choke and a brass front bead. Weighing just 5 lbs. 4 oz., the gun is exceptionally light and responsive, embodying the handling qualities of a true English game gun.
The stock is configured with a traditional English straight grip and checkered wood butt, maintaining period correct aesthetics and function. Dimensions are as follows:
– Length of Pull: 14 7/8”
– Drop at Comb: 1 1/2”
– Drop at Heel: 2 3/16”
– Cast: 1/8” off
The shotgun is housed in its original leather violin style case with proper Lancaster trade label, a rare and desirable accompaniment that significantly enhances its presentation and collector appeal.
This gun has been professionally restored and brought back to proper specifications by Akin, Grant & Lang, one of the most respected firms in the restoration and refinement of fine British sporting arms. Their work has been executed with careful attention to maintaining the original character and integrity of the gun.
Condition is excellent as restored, with strong mechanical function and well preserved engraving and metal finish. The wood displays attractive figure and remains consistent with the overall quality expected of a Lancaster of this era.
The combination of Lancaster craftsmanship, ultra light single shot sidelock design, documented restoration by a premier London firm, and Cyril Adams provenance makes this a truly unique and compelling offering.
Guns of this type are rarely encountered on the market and represent a meaningful opportunity for the advanced collector or sportsman seeking a refined and historically significant British sporting arm.
